One of the Top Three Athletic Programs in the State of Florida
Striving for excellence on the field and in the classroom
LRHS Academic Team Champions Again
For the second year in a row, the Lakewood Ranch High School Athletic Program has been awarded the FHSAA's Academic Team Champion Award. Last year the Mustangs were the winner in the 4A classification, while this season, they are champions in the 6A classification. To qualify for the award, individual sports must first have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (on the unweighted scale). If the sport then passes that test, their GPA is compared to other schools in the same sport. If the sport is in the top ten with their GPA they are then awarded points. LRHS scored 123 points this season to best second place Naples Baron Collier who scored 115. No other schools in Manatee County were in the top ten in any classification.
Congratulations to LRHS students on this accomplishment. It again shows the level of dedication towards academics that our student athletes, coaches, teachers and administrators have.
Mustangs Bringing Home State Championships in All Seasons
Winning a State Championship in High School Sports is a difficult task. Doing it in the State of Florida is even harder due to high level of athletic excellence in the warm weather of the State. That's why the 2011-2012 season is becoming such a great year for the Mustangs. The season was started out with a team championship as the Mustangs Boys Golf Team captured the State Golf Championship. In the same fall season, the Mustangs also got individual State Championships from Olivia Ortiz (Cross Country), Danielle Valley won twice in Swimming, while Will Kazokas also added a State Title in swimming. If those weren't already enough, the Mustangs just added two more individual titles. In boys tennis the doubles team of Arsav and Arnav Mohatny won the doubles title, while Cari Berry and Ashley Bongart won the girls doubles title, capping the finest day in Mustang Tennis history.
These alone could make any school's career, much less one season. The Mustangs still have Track and Field (highlighting the aforementioned Olivia Ortiz), Softball and Baseball to finish. Could more hardware be on the way?
Boys Golf are State Champs!
The Lakewood Ranch Boys golf team is the 2011 State Champions. After finishing the regular season undefeated, the Mustangs braved windy conditions at the El Campeon course at Howey-in-the-hills, Florida to defeat the weather and the field. The Mustangs two day total of 621 (317-304) was good enough to beat runner-up Spruce Creek by six strokes. The players battled both days posting scores higher than they had all season, but kept their cool and showed they are, without a doubt, the best team in the State. On day one, the Mustangs were paced by Sophomore Ramsey Touchberry’s +2 (74). On the final day, senior Hunter Sagar’s three over 75 led the way, with fellow senior Connor Baldwin’s 76, and Sophomore Danny Walker also shooting 76, the Mustangs would not be denied.
This is only the second team State Championship in school history (Baseball 2003). It is also the first Golf State Championship, from a public school, in Manatee County History. The golfers and coaches showed an outstanding representation of the Mustang spirit. Congratulations to Coach Frantz and the team! Go Mustangs!
Final Grades Show Mustangs as Leaders
It's that time of the year when students receive their final grades and can evaluate how they did this school year. The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) has recently devised a way to evaluate athletic programs. They have two statewide competitions, one that looks at academic excellence among athletic teams, and a second one that scores overall athletic team performances. According to those two evaluations, LRHS is performing like an All-Star program. In fact, only three schools statewide finished either first or second in both awards. Lakewood Ranch was one of those three teams. The Mustangs Athletic program finished first academically and second athletically in the 4A classification. No other Manatee County school finished in the top ten athletically or academically.
This is a clear case of a public school that is doing it right. This should be seen as a tremendous source of pride among the Mustang faithful. Great job to Principal Nesselhauf and Coach Trent for leading these outstanding student athletes!
Mustangs Celebrate 2nd Annual Scholar Athlete Event
Lakewood Ranch High School continues to excel in Academics and Athletics. At the 2nd Annual Scholar Athlete Event, over 315 athlete's were honored for earning a 3.5 GPA, or higher, while participating in sports. This constitutes over 62 percent of the athletes. Special awards were given to Small Sports (Boys Swimming), Large Sports (Girls Soccer), Male Athlete (Alec Bacon) and Female Athlete (Kaitlyn Wolfe). Bacon, Wolfe, and the two sports received the highest overall GPA. Congratulations to all of the Scholar Athlete's for their dedication to Sports... and more importantaly academics!

2010-11 Teams Following a Tough Act
As the Fall sport season begins anew, it is important to review what was accomplished last year by the 2009-10 teams. Last season, the bar was set at an extremely high level for future Mustang Athletes. Excelling in both Athletics and Academics, the 2009-10 Mustangs were able to achieve that perfect blend of smarts and skills. As all 22 teams qualified for the FHSAA's Academic Team Award (which requires an un-weighted GPA of 3.0 or better), they also combined to come in number 4 in the State in the Sunshine Cup Award(which is the best example of team athletic excellence). The accomplishments are too many to be shown here, but feel free to peruse Team Accomplishments. It is a very impressive list!
